Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of Oct. 26 through Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of Oct. 26 through Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 900 DUI arrests compared with 969 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.1 percent.

Kona District police arrested five motorists, South Kohala officers cited three drivers and Ka‘u police nabbed one person. South Hilo police arrested 11 drivers, while Puna officers cited five motorists for DUI.

There have been 1,268 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,330 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7 percent.

So far this year, there were 16 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 45.5 percent.

To date, six fatalities were related to drugs and five to a combination of drugs and alcohol, police said.
